Our origin story
Starting in 2001, Projectworks began as a simple in-house time tracking tool, created by co-founder Doug Taylor to meet a pressing need within his professional services firm, Provoke.
By 2011, Julian Clarke, a keen problem solver at Provoke, recognized the potential to evolve Doug’s software into something greater. He expanded its capabilities to support Provoke's rapid growth, and the first iteration of what would become Projectworks was born.
As new staff joined Provoke, they often wished they’d had Projectworks in their previous workplaces. Seeing this opportunity, Matt Hayter, a long-standing Provoker, turned Projectworks from a product into a business in 2016.
From strength to strength
Fast forward to 2019 and Projectworks was ready for launch. Following a successful funding round, the team hit the ground running, assembling the experts who would shape Projectworks into the globally loved platform it is today.

Since then, Projectworks has empowered professional services businesses worldwide to grow their margins and expand their teams. Our customers success has driven our growth, enabling us to reinvest in our product, service, and mission to strengthen the global professional services industry.

Mark Orttung
Prior to joining as Projectworks CEO in 2024, Mark grew the consultancy firm Nexient from 200 to 1100 staff and was president and COO at fintech platform Bill.com.
Matt Hayter
Leveraging his professional services experience and insight, Matt leads the Product function for Projectworks and holds the position of Company President.
Madeline Bakewell
With a long track record of growing SaaS businesses, Madeline leads our sales, marketing & partnerships functions.
Doug Taylor
An experienced leader, Doug has founded three successful companies, including a professional service firm and two SaaS companies.
Julian Clarke
Dedicated and visionary, Julian has built Projectworks from the ground up and leads our technical development function.
Board of Directors
Saeed Khorami
Saeed serves as an Operating Partner at Bridgewest Ventures and previously built Skyriver Communications from the ground up. He has over 20 years of experience growing technology companies.
Matt Hayter
As CPO and president on the board, Matt brings knowledge from day-to-day operations, and a technical understanding of the Projectworks software and the industry we operate within.
Nadine Hill
Nadine is a Senior Investment Manager and Partner at Punakaiki Fund. She has over 15 years of experience in international capital at both private and public entities.
Mark Orttung
Mark is both the CEO of Projectworks and a member on the board. Prior to this he was president and COO at fintech platform Bill.com for seven years before becoming the CEO of consultancy firm Nexient in 2014.
